母语学习论坛 Mother Tongue Languages Symposium
The Mother Tongue Languages (MTL) Symposium was successfully held on 20 August 2016 at Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre. It was co-organised by Ministry of Education (MOE) and Mother Tongue Language Learning and Promotion Committees (MTLLPC), with support from Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA), Chinese Language and Culture Fund (CLCF), the Lee Kuan Yew Fund for Bilingualism (LKYFB), Bicultural Taskforce (BCT), Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and National Library Board (NLB). The presentation of the Outstanding Pre-School MTL Teacher Award was also held at the morning’s Opening & Award Ceremony, by our Guest-of-Honour, Ms Low Yen Ling, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Trade and Industry.
Themed “A Garden for Joyful Discoveries” , this year’s MTL Symposium emphasised the importance of encouraging children to explore and discover the fun of MTL learning, as well as the emphasis of family-centred efforts to create MTL learning environments beyond the classroom context. This year, a total of 14,000 visitors came to the Symposium, participated in a day of activities at the Opening & Award Ceremony, 43 exhibition booths, MTL Wonderland, MTL Sensory Trail and 28 sharing sessions. It was heartening to receive positive feedback from participants (be it children, parents or educators) who have enjoyed the language learning opportunities and were engaged in the MTLS experience.
